Schalke 04 coach Felix Magath has hinted Manuel Neuer has the temperament to play for Manchester United.

United goalkeeper coach Eric Steele has made several trips to Germany in the past month to check on the 24 year-old.

"If Manuel Neuer player 30 metres further forward he would be the ideal captain," Magath told the Bild newspaper.

"Without a leader we, having made it 2-2 in Hannover, immediately did too little again."
