Newcastle United still maintain interest in Schalke defender Joel Matip.

The Magpies have expressed their interest in signing Matip this summer in order to strengthen their backline but a deal looked unlikely to take place after the Bundesliga side's manager Horst Heldt slammed the speculation.

However, according to the Chronicle, Cameroon international Matip still remains on the radar of Toon boss Steve McClaren who is determined to add some quality defenders to his ranks ahead of the 2015/16 Premier League season.
