Schalke chief Horst Heldt admits they cannot meet the wage demands of Tottenham midfielder Lewis Holtby.
Holtby's agent has opened the door to return to Schalke this month, but his €4.3 million salary is proving a stumbling block.
"We will not break our financial framework," Heldt made clear.
Stoke City are also interested in the Germany international.
