Tottenham are pushing to sign Schalke winger Lewis Holtby this month.

Holtby, 22, has signed an agreement to join Spurs on a Bosman free in the summer but, with midfielder Sandro ruled out for the rest of the season, Spurs want Holtby now rather than when his contract runs out at the end of the season.

Schalke chief Horst Heldt said: "We are in talks about a move in this transfer period, but there is no agreement."

Heldt dismissed claims Holtby could try and engineer a move away adding: "Lewis is a good character, he will give everything to the last day for the club."
