Former Sunderland boss Denis Smith has praised chairman Niall Quinn for putting Ricky Sbragia in temporary charge.
"Niall will know that the club is in safe hands with Rick in charge," said Smith, who managed Sunderland for five years until December 1991.
"Rick isn't that well known among fans, but inside the game he's hugely respected and highly regarded.
"The fact Sir Alex Ferguson gave him a coaching job at Manchester United tells its own story."
Smith, who has known Sbragia since they were at York together, added: "Personally, I believe Rick would be an excellent choice as manager.
"These days it seems to be about the biggest names not the best candidates.
"Rick possesses a great football brain and understands what makes players tick."
