Savage wrote in the Mirror: "If David Moyes wants to put the cat among the pigeons at Old Trafford, he needs to sign another Eric Cantona.
"When he rebuilds Manchester United’s squad in 2014 – and it’s pretty clear there is major surgery required, not just a little housekeeping – Moyes can afford to rock the boat.
"Instead of panic buys in January (often short-term solutions to long-term problems), he should go out and buy three or four world-class players next summer.
"Just as Sir Alex Ferguson stunned his rivals by landing Cantona from Leeds for a pittance 20 years ago, Moyes needs a marquee signing as a statement of intent.
"How about Zlatan Ibrahimovic?
"He is a Cantona-type player who would give the Reds a real lift – and with Sweden missing out on the World Cup, he will not be worn out after a long summer.
"A signing of that calibre would hopefully go some way towards reassuring Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie that United are still ambitious enough to compete in the transfer market for players of world-class stature."
