Savage: What has Man Utd become if you all you need to do is stop Fellaini?

Robbie Savage posed an interesting question in his column for the Daily Mirror on Thursday night.

The former Manchester United midfielder believes his old club have some problems if the way to stop them is to negate midfielder Marouane Fellaini.

Louis van Gaal's side have lost their past two matches to Chelsea and Everton who identified Belgium international Fellaini as United's biggest threat but Savage suggests that is not a good sign for one of Europe's biggest clubs.

'Amid all the talk about "boring" Chelsea and dull football, something got lost in the wash this week,' Savage opined.

'What has the biggest club in the world come to - and where is it heading? - when opponents realise the best way to nullify Manchester United is to neutralize Marouane Fellaini?

'Since when has one of the biggest clubs in Europe built its team around a 6ft 4in midfielder who provides aerial support to the forwards?

'Is that what Manchester United have become?'

Savage, who was cast aside by United back in 1994 without making a senior appearance, added: 'Before fans turn round and accuse me of being bitter as a member of the Class of '92 who didn't make the first team at Old Trafford, do me a favour.

'I love United and the traditions they stand for. I am a big fan.

'But how many of Europe's biggest clubs rely on a 6ft 4in auxiliary forward to produce their best football?

'Yes, that's a significant improvement on last year, but I cannot believe fourth place, with Fellaini as the central piece of the jigsaw, is enough for a club of their stature.

'It should only be the bare minimum.'
