Savage: Man Utd have blown title defence with poor summer market

Former Manchester United midfielder Robbie Savage fears his old club have blown the title after a poor summer market.

Savage wrote in the Mirror: "Manchester City lost last season's title before the campaign even started because they dithered in the summer transfer window and missed out on signing Robin van Persie.

"Twelve months on, I am concerned that Manchester United will live to regret their deadline-day scramble - because I think they can already kiss goodbye to being No.1 in the Premier League.

"Let's be fair to David Moyes: Nobody knows Marouane Fellaini better than the United manager, and if Moyes thinks he will be a hit at Old Trafford, time will probably prove him right.

"But I can't understand why United paid £27m for a player they could have signed for £4m less before the end of July under the terms of Fellaini's contract at Everton.

"And for all his aerial power, and the steel he will bring to their midfield, I'm not sure Fellaini is a player in the same mould as United's greatest signings.

"To me, he is no Cantona, Rio or Ronaldo."
