Savage blasts Man Utd's van Gaal - 'He is getting an easy ride'

Robbie Savage believes Louis van Gaal has been let off for his poor start to life as Manchester United's manager.

The Dutchman has won just once in six matches since taking over at Old Trafford in the summer but Savage suggests that he has not copped the same criticism as David Moyes did in a similar same situation last season.

Former United, Leicester City and Derby County midfielder Savage wrote the following in his column for The Mirror:

'Let's stop beating around the bush - Louis van Gaal has made a hash of his first six games at Manchester United and he is getting an easy ride.

'If David Moyes had come up with the same results at the start of his short-lived reign at Old Trafford 12 months ago, he would have been fried for breakfast.

'Van Gaal has talked about needing time to establish his philosophy, whether it's three at the back, a diamond in midfield or whatever.

'But how about a philosophy of keeping the ball out of your own net?

'The way United were taken apart in the last half-hour at Leicester (when they lost 5-3) was embarrassing and after spending £150million in the last transfer window, van Gaal should be able to put out a side who can defend properly.'

Savage added: 'Make no mistake, Manchester United are going to be great to watch under van Gaal - but they may need to score three or four every week to win the game because the back door is wide open.

'And make no mistake, van Gaal has been getting away with some dreadful results so far.

'David Moyes, who signed only Marouane Fellaini in his first transfer window, would have been absolutely slaughtered by now if he had come up with this start.'
