Savage wrote in his column for the Mirror: "There seems to be a common assumption that the man who takes over from Fabio Capello next year will be English.
"But Wenger has been at Arsenal for 15 years now, which makes him the next-best thing to an Englishman.
"He knows the Premier League inside out, he knows what makes English players tick... and although the Gunners might be going through a rough patch right now, everyone agrees Wenger's teams down the years have been sublime to watch.
"Let me stress that I'm not trying to hustle him out of the door at the Emirates.
"Ultimately, how long he stays at Arsenal is the prerogative of Wenger himself or the club's board.
"But if he did leave them between now and next summer, I think he would be a fantastic appointment for England."
