Quique Sanchez Flores has agreed a new one-year contract with Atletico Madrid.
Sanchez Flores, whose existing contract ran out this summer, took charge of Atletico last October following the dismissal of Abel Resino and under the former Valencia and Benfica coach the Rojiblancos enjoyed a remarkable turnaround in fortune.
Following a dismal first few months to the campaign, which saw them suffer their worst league start in 56 years and get knocked out of the Champions League at the group stages without winning a single match, Atletico ended up reaching two cup finals.
In the Europa League final they beat Fulham to pick up their first major trophy since 1996, while they also got to the final of the Copa del Rey, where they lost 2-0 to Sevilla last week.
Atletico still struggled for consistency in the league, though, and finished the campaign in ninth spot, 16 points off the fourth-placed position they had occupied for the previous two seasons.
The 45-year-old Sanchez Flores will put pen to paper on his new contract tomorrow, Atletico announced on their website.
