San Jose Earthquakes forward Alan Gordon has been punished by MLS for using unacceptable and offensive language towards an opponent on the weekend.
The 31-year old allegedly made a homophobic slur directed at Portland Timbers midfielder Will Johnson in the Quakes 1-0 loss on Sunday and has copped a three-match suspension and been fined an undisclosed amount by the league.
Gordon was also sent off late in the game for an elbow on Mikael Silvestre and will serve an automatic one-match ban for that, meaning he will be out for a total of four games. He has also been ordered to attend diversity and sensitivity training.
