San Jose Earthquakes forward Gordon apologizes for homophobic slur

Alan Gordon has apologized for comments he made during San Jose Earthquakes' 1-0 loss to Portland Timbers on Sunday night.

The 31-year old forward allegedly made a homophobic slur directed at Timbers midfielder Will Johnson before later being sent from the pitch for elbowing Mikael Silvestre in the mouth.

Gordon has since said sorry for denigrating the gay community: "I sincerely apologize for what I said in our game tonight.

"Although I said it in the heat of the moment, that language has no place in our game. That is not my character, but there is still no excuse for saying what I said. I made a mistake and I accept full responsibility for my actions."
