San Jose Earthquakes confirm Watson as new head coach

San Jose Earthquakes have signed Mark Watson as the clubs new permanent head coach.

The former Canadian international acted as interim head coach after Frank Yallop's departure in June and the team's performances since then helped him land the job on a less temporary basis.

Watson, who led the Quakes to a record of 11-5-3 in the second half of the 2013 MLS season, has signed a multi-year deal which has delighted president Dave Kaval.

"We're excited to sign Mark to a multi-year contract after his tremendous finish to the 2013 season," said Kaval.

"Mark inherited an adverse situation, but he found a way to qualify the club for the CONCACAF Champions League Quarterfinals and nearly rallied us to an MLS Cup Playoff berth.

"We look forward to having Mark on our sideline as we continue to move toward a new era of Earthquakes soccer."

Watson added: "I'm very excited for the opportunity. We have a great group here and I'm grateful for the chance to be here on a permanent deal.

"I think the club is heading in the right direction and look forward to building on the success we had at the end of this season."
