The San Jose Earthquakes said the decision to bring in goalkeeper Jon Busch after he was released by Chicago Fire was simply to strengthen the club's stocks.
The Quakes already have a very capable shot-stopper in the form of Joe Cannon but general manager John Doyle and coach Frank Yallop said when they heard Busch was up for transfer, they had to jump at the chance to take him.
"I don't think it hurt the San Francisco 49ers when they had Joe Montana and Steve Young," Doyle said. "Now I'm not saying this is at that level. But in any sport, it's good to have two capable people at any one position."
Yallop added: "It would be foolish to pass him up. We had a chance to add a really good goalkeeper. Jon and Joe are a good tandem. Joe is the No. 1 right now, but funny things happen in football. It's good to have that quality in the waiting."
