NFL club San Francisco 49ers have confirmed their agreement to invest in a possible Major League Soccer expansion.
49ers chief executive Jed York has revealed that the five-time Super Bowl champions have joined NBA side Sacramento Kings in throwing their financial support behind Sacramento Republic FC.
The USL PRO team, which was founded in 2012, is pursuing a pathway into the USA and Canada's top flight and it has just been given a mighty helping hand with the news that the 49ers are now on board with the Kings.
"We have more 49ers season ticket holders in Sacramento than we do in San Francisco," York told the Sacramento Bee.
The announcement of the Kings yesterday, and the 49ers today, promoted the following words from Sacramento Republic FC's lead investor Kevin Nagle.
"We want to make it very easy for MLS to make a decision," Nagle said. "We built an extraordinary ownership group. It's going to make a very strong, compelling case."
If Sacramento do happen to be successful in their pursuit, they will become the third team from the state of California joining current champions the LA Galaxy as well as San Jose Earthquakes.
