Sampdoria eye instant promotion over Italian betting scandal

Sampdoria are eyeing immediate promotion over Italy's betting scandal.

Yesterday 18 clubs and 26 individuals were told they have a case to answer after it's alleged that an illegal betting ring tried to influence the outcome of certain games on the peninsula for financial gain.

Atalanta risk a points penalty or even demotion from Serie A due to the 'indirect responsibility' clause.

"In theory Sampdoria could be promoted in Atalanta's place, but we don't want to kid ourselves," explained Samp Vice-President Edoardo Garrone.

"We are following the situation carefully and we can only hope. In any case, we'll continue along our plans to create the best team possible for Serie B this season.

"If something positive were to come of it, then there's time to celebrate."
