Sampdoria chief Beppe Marotta has confirmed they came close to signing Flamengo striker Adriano.

He said: "Our preferred policy, other than focusing on young talent, is to 'recover' great champions who have perhaps lost their way.

"We had given Adriano some thought. It's a shame he is no longer available, seeing as he decided to remain in Brazil."
