Sacchi urges Roma to be patient and stick with Enrique

Former AC Milan and Italy coach Arrigo Sacchi says AS Roma fans must be patient with Luis Enrique.

Sacchi, who implemented a new style of play at Milan in the late 1980s, believes Enrique deserves more time.

"To make a strong change you need two components that we know are rare - patience and the expertise to evaluate the work in perspective," the 66-year-old told Il Romanista.

"The reason is for the adaptation that is needed and for the errors that you are likely to commit along the way. It's because you tend to commit more errors when you are working.

"You must allow the players to grow, but you also need to put someone aside who can see if the project is not working.

"Franco Baldini has very rightly protected [Enrique and the project]. If one wants to innovate but does not have the support of the club, then they will never make it in the world.

"Ditto if you don't sign the best players, not in terms of ability, but in terms of functionality to the idea. If they are then among the most talented players then all the better.

"But, meanwhile, they need to be functional, and this is the hardest thing in a country where the teams, when changing Coaches, are not teams - they are like the Tower of Babel, a club over which so many have presided but each with diametrically opposite results."
