Russian referee hospitalised after attempting suicide

The Russian Football Association has confirmed that 44-year old referee Almir Kayumovis is recovering in a psychiatric hospital after attempting to commit suicide.

FA president Vitaly Mutko said that the official was in safe conditions now after he threatened to jump from the window of his apartment on Monday.

"His condition is satisfactory right now," Mutko told the state news agency RIA on Thursday. "We don't know the exact reasons that led him to this but we're investigating."

Referees' chief Sergei Zuyev also confirmed the news and said he was monitoring the situation closely.

"All we can say right now is he is in a (psychiatric) hospital and we're in constant contact with his doctors who are monitoring his condition," Zuyev said.
