Russia coach Guus Hiddink branded Steve McClaren a fool and claimed England were trying to use the plastic pitch in Moscow as an excuse.
The England squad trained on similar pitches before flying out for the Euro 2008 Qualifier, but fear their preparations could be wrecked by the plastic grass being watered just before kick-off, changing the way it plays.
Hiddink dismissed the complaints, which he warned would fire up his men, and predicted the pressure on England "would be terrible".
He said: "The controversy about the surface and the pitch is just foolishness. If England is such a big team then they should be prepared and be ready to play on any pitch.
"It's the same for both teams and it's been passed to play by UEFA, so there can be no excuses."
Russia's Sevilla striker Alexander Kerzhakov added: "I don't understand England's complaints. Perhaps they are scared and are looking for excuses in case they lose."
