Rugby professional appointed Preston chairman

Former Wigan Warriors chairman Maurice Lindsay is the new chairman of Preston North End. The close friend of Deepdale benefactor Trevor Hemmings will take over at the helm on Tuesday, following the resignation of Derek Shaw, reports the Lancashire Telegraph.

Lindsay, who has stepped down from his role at Premier LeagueWigan Athletic and the town's rugby club with immediate effect, said he expected to meet with North End boss Darren Ferguson to discuss plans for the future on Tuesday.

He said: "I am delighted to be joining PNE as chairman.

"Everybody knows the history and tradition of the club.

"I myself grew up in an age when the names of Preston and Tom Finney were synonymous with success.

"Like everyone else in the game, I want to see PNE's image restored to the highest possible level."

He added that Mr Shaw would remain at the club as a vice-president.
