Real Salt Lake general manager Garth Lagerwey admits it is tough to decide who should and shouldn't be protected from the MLS Expansion Draft.
As incoming franchise Montreal Impact gets set to choose 10 unprotected players from 18 MLS clubs later today, Lagerwey says it was a difficult choice putting the likes of Andy Williams, Ned Grabavoy and Robbie Russell on the list that the Impact can select from.
| "It's never fun to say who is protected and who is not," Lagerwey told the MSalt Lake Tribune. "When you have to say that to guys who have made a major contribution to the club over many years.
"It's about protecting the best group.
"We look at salary, contract, experience, quality of depth. It's never one thing.
"[Creating the list is] psychological more than anything, making peace with someone you will have to do without."
