Wayne Rooney is seeking assurances from manager Sir Alex Ferguson over his place in Manchester United's plans. The Daily Mail says negotiations over whether to extend the England forward's £250,000-a-week deal will begin in the next few weeks amid huge uncertainty over Rooney's future. His main concern is likely to be where he will play now Robin van Persie has established himself as the club's first-choice striker.
Rooney has been played out of position several times this season and the possibility of United manager Ferguson continuing to use him in a utility role will increase if United land Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski or Atletico Madrid's Radamel Falcao.
England's leading striker has played in midfield recently and that is bound to raise concerns with the World Cup just over a year away and qualification far from certain.
