Rooney unlikely to be fit for Man Utd’s opening Champions League game

Captain Wayne Rooney is expected to miss Manchester United's Champions League opener on Tuesday.

The Red Devils face Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven in Holland in Group B but are likely to make the trip without their skipper and star striker who missed Saturday's 3-1 win over Liverpool with a hamstring injury.

Of Rooney's likeliness of playing, manager Louis van Gaal said: "I don't think he will play.

"He is injured so we have to take care of him. I think he is very important for us and I don't want to take any risks, so that's why he didn't play against Liverpool.

"We have to wait and see if he can play against PSV because we still have days to go. I don't think he will but maybe he shall play at Southampton."

England skipper Rooney picked up the problem at training last week after returning from international duty.
