Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera believes his Red Devils teammate Wayne Rooney is the best English footballer in history.

Herrera heaped praise on the 29-year-old after both players found themselves on the scoresheet in United's 3-0 win over Rooney's former club Everton on Saturday.

"Wayne is our leader. He is the best English player in English history and we are lucky to have him," Herrera said of Rooney who scored just his second league goal of the season.

"When he fights like he did on Saturday we can be very proud of him. He has always helped me a lot."
