Rooney may be all-time England scorer but Hodgson cannot guarantee automatic selection

England manager Roy Hodgson admits Wayne Rooney will not necessarily be an automatic selection down the track.

The Manchester United striker recently broke Sir Bobby Charlton's long-standing scoring record to become his country's all-time leading goalscorer and although he is safe for now, the 29-year-old has no guarantees he will be first-choice under Hodgson.

After announcing his squad for upcoming Euro2016 qualifiers with Estonia and Lithuania, Hodgson said that no player has the guarantee of starting for the Three Lions, including captain Rooney.

"At the moment, that day has not arrived," Hodgson said when asked if he would ever drop Rooney.

"With any luck it won't arrive because he will continue to play well and he will continue to merit his place and we will still talk as warmly about him after the tournament in June as we are now, but there is no guarantee.

"I have been in football a long time and Wayne Rooney has been in football a long time. He would regard me as someone who is very false if I ever said to him your place is guaranteed.

"He would not expect it, and I would be very upset if anyone asked me to give them a guarantee of a place. No one else has ever done, and I would take umbrage if that day ever arrived."

England host Estonia at Wembley on October 9 before heading to Vilnius to take on Lithuania on October 12.
