Everton secured a slender 1-0 victory over MFK Rozumberok in the first leg of their Europa League third Qualifying round tie.
The home side starting promisingly with Wayne Rooney, Davy Klaassen and Dominic Calvert-lewis interchanging effectively.
It was Rooney, on his home-coming, who had the first real chance with just under 20 minutes gone, with Leighton Baines teeing up the former Manchester United star to shoot wide.
Moments later the Toffees number 10 almost found the net, but his stretched effort could be diverted softly at the goalkeeper.
A neat one-two between Calvert-Lewis and Klaassen saw the the latter hit a fine shot, which rippled the side-netting.
Just before half-time Calvert-Lewis had a decent attempt at goal which was saved as both sides went in at the break goalless.
A nervy start from Everton's defence in the second half saw Erik Daniel capitalise, only for him to send a poor snapshot wide.
But the Blues began to up the tempo, with Klaasan sending a header over before Mirallas sent a fierce drive that the visiting goalkeeper had to push away.
It was MFK Ruzomberok centre-back Peter Maslo, who's rattled header off the bar, which gave the Premier League side the wake-up they needed just after hour mark.
And it was Leighton Baines, starting his 11th season at Goodison Park, who made the breakthrough for his side, driving a low shot, which found its way into the net via a deflection.
The visiting team pushed for an equaliser late on but it was Ronald Koeman's men who go away with a one-nil advantage ahead the the second leg next week in Slovakia.
