Rooney happy Man Utd pal Ferdinand handed England captaincy

Wayne Rooney is delighted Manchester United teammate Rio Ferdinand is taking on the England captaincy.

Some pundits had Rooney as a possible England captain following the sacking of the disgraced John Terry, but he contends manager Fabio Capello has chosen the right man in United team-mate Ferdinand.

Rooney said: "Hopefully I will be England captain in the future and I'd be really proud to do that, but there are a lot more experienced players in the squad.

"Rio is a great captain. He's captained a Champions League win and he captained us in Milan. I'm sure he'll revel in the job."
