Rooney captaincy simple decision for England boss Allardyce

Sam Allardyce insists it was not a difficult choice for him to name Wayne Rooney as England captain.

The Manchester United skipper was handed the Three Lions armband by Roy Hodgson in 2014 and will now continue on in the role after it was confirmed by Allardyce recently.

The former Sunderland boss said on Monday: "Wayne has been an excellent captain for England and the manner in which he has fulfilled the role made it an easy decision for me to ask him to continue.

"Wayne's record speaks for itself, he is the most senior member of the squad and he is hugely respected by his peers. All of these factors point towards him being the right choice to lead the team."

He added: "I think he (Rooney) has enjoyed the responsibility. Some players don't want that responsibility."
