Roma's De Rossi admits Italy were fortunate

Italy's two-goal hero Daniele de Rossi admits they were lucky after victory over Georgia in last night's World Cup qualifier.

The Roma midfielder hit both goals in the 2-0 win and admitted afterwards: "It's difficult to play in September because of the fitness levels and the searing heat. I know it's a cliché that there are no weak teams anymore, but it's true, especially at this time when you are not 100 per cent in shape.

"Cyprus did not deserve to lose last week and Georgia did well tonight too, but we did enough to win it.

"It's not easy to play these games when you only have one game under your belt, but at the same time in such an intense season you need some time off in the summer."

AC Milan's Andrea Pirlo was substituted at half-time and some have said De Rossi should be given the reins to the Azzurri team rather than be forced into a partnership that doesn't always work.

"I don't see any problems playing with Pirlo. He is my best friend in the squad and the best midfielder in the world, so it is an honour for me to play alongside him," insisted De Rossi.

The Roma midfielder had a very special dedication, as his father-in-law was found murdered last month and two men have now been arrested.

"I dedicate this brace to my father-in-law, who we miss very much and my thoughts are for him.

"These were difficult days, but once I get on to the field I leave the everyday life behind and focus on my work. It's been tough for me, but especially for my wife and her family."
