Roma survive Empoli Coppa tie thanks to controversial penalty

AS Roma have defeated Empoli to reach the Coppa Italia quarterfinals.

The match was taken into extra-time and settled by Daniele de Rossi's controversial penalty.

On 112 minutes, the referee pointed to the spot for Piotr Zielinski's sliding tackle on Javier Paredes, but replays show the Empoli man made contact with the ball. Daniele De Rossi converted by sending Davide Bassi the wrong way as Empoli's furious protests continued.

Roma boss Rudi Garcia said: "You can see that he cuts down his legs, then it's difficult to tell whether it was before or after he got the ball. I think the referee was in an excellent position to judge, as he was only five metres away, so we should have faith in his judgment.

"In any case, I don't want to talk about referees and incidents. Can we talk about football, please?"
