Roma boss Spalletti furious after Atalanta defeat

Roma boss Luciano Spalletti was furious after defeat to Atalanta.

The Giallorossi were leading 1-0 in Bergamo, but were utterly dominated in the second half and eventually overturned 2-1.

“The issue is if you stop playing, then the opposition will take control and score," Spalletti told Mediaset Premium.

“In the first half we did well and played the ball. In the second we didn't do anything and this heavy result was a consequence.

“Unfortunately this is one of our characteristics. Either we control the game or fall away. We make naïve mistakes and when the going gets tough, we just stop. We stop relying on quality, stop with the intensity.

“Even before the winning penalty, we'd run two or three massive risks at the back. It's a result we have to accept, because it was our performance that led to it.

“We should've made more of our chances in the first half, but principally the fault is of the Coach if the team lacks the right attitude and identity.

“Our defect is that we drop the level of our football so much that the opposition takes over and then we can't get back into gear. It's safe to say if we don't take control, someone else will. Atalanta did well, but we were poor.

“This game feels like a summation of our season. It's true that today we faced an Atalanta side in good shape, but if we play well, then it's difficult for any opponent."
