AS Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi is proud to be leading Italy tonight against Ivory Coast.

De Rossi will be Cesare Prandelli’s first capitano given that Gigi Buffon is injured and Andrea Pirlo hasn’t been selected for the Upton Park test.

“I do feel a particular responsibility,” said the Roma player. “In the last few days I have tried to help the youngsters settle.

“However, I’m well aware that the armband will return to players such as Buffon, Pirlo or Gianluca Zambrotta when they return as they have more caps than me.”

De Rossi is the only member of the 2006 World Cup winning squad in the present set-up and he’s keen for the Azzurri to return to their glorious past.

“We need to find that something extra which helped us win in Germany,” he continued.

“We also need to try to understand what we lost from the mentality which allowed us as players to win the most important trophy there is.”
