Queensland Roar continued their brilliant form away from home with a convincing 2-0 win over the Central Coast Mariners last night.
In the first leg of the minor semi-final at Bluetongue Stadium, the Roar once again managed to overcome the Mariners at their home ground and almost certainly set up a preliminary final berth.
Youngster Mitch Nichols opened the scoring in the 27th minute when he headed home Matt McKay’s corner.
The Mariners could not get enough shots on target to really worry the Roar and when Nichols made a run into the box and was brought down by Paul O’Grady it looked like it was the visitors night.
The referee pointed to the spot and Dutchman Sergio van Dijk made no mistake despite the best efforts of the recalled Liam Reddy in goals.
15 minutes from time, veteran Roar midfielder Danny Tiatto picked up his second caution and was sent from the pitch, igniting any hope for the home side but they were unable to deliver and Frank Farina’s side take a handy advantage into the second leg at Suncorp Stadium next Friday.
