Rivals encouraged as Chelsea haggle over Kakuta contract talks

Rival clubs will be encouraged over Chelsea's tough stand in contract talks with Gael Kakuta.

The Independent says Chelsea are taking a hard line over contract negotiations with a number of their academy stars including Kakuta.

The France Under-17 forward who was at the centre of a Fifa charge for the Premier League champions last year, of which they were subsequently cleared by the governing body. The 19-year-old, regarded as one of the best in his age-group in the world, has still not signed a new deal at the club, raising fears that they could lose him on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Chelsea would be entitled to compensation for the player whom they signed from Lens in acrimonious circumstances in 2007. Given that Kakuta has spent three years at the club, Chelsea could expect a payment of close to £1m for his development although that would still represent a bargain for a player who was one of the most sought-after in Europe several years ago.

Bayern Munich and Lyon are among clubs keeping tabs on the situation.
