Richardson: Man Utd striker Welbeck will not want to leave Sunderland

Sunderland midfielder Kieran Richardson reckons Danny Welbeck will not want to leave should he join on-loan from Manchester United.

Richardson knows from experience that a loan spell can prove the catalyst for a young player's career - he went from being a young squad player at Man U to winning senior England honours via a five-month stay at West Bromwich Albion in 2005.

And if Welbeck does end up at Sunderland, Richardson hopes his time on Wearside will have a similar effect.

"When I went to West Brom I went back to Man United and, to be honest, I wanted to go back to West Brom for another season and Bryan Robson wanted me to go back for another season," he told the Sunday Sun. "Sir Alex persuaded me to stay at Man U but I always think that if I'd gone back for another season I would have pushed on quicker.

"Danny would want to play here as much as possible and get experience and the gaffer here will try to give him an opportunity.

"There are a lot of players here in his position but he's played on the right wing as well and that could be another string to his bow."
