Louis van Gaal blocked Manchester United from signing PSG star Edinson Cavani, it has been revealed.

The Manchester Evening News says Old Trafford chiefs were keen on the Paris St-Germain star.

Although he splashed the cash during his tenure - including big-bucks swoops for Angel Di Maria, Memphis Depay and Ander Herrera - he was apparently not prepared to bring Cavani to England.

Taking to Twitter, Manchester Evening News reporter Samuel Luckhurst wrote: "Cavani bottling it in a big game again.

"Van Gaal got little right at United but he was right to kill off interest in Cavani."
