Manchester United believe Fred can be their answer to Manchester City ace David Silva.

Fred is expected to form part of a three-man midfield alongside Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.

The Brazilian, though, is not simply a defensive-minded midfielder and is seen as the player to offer zip to United's football.

The Manchester Evening News says United view Fred as their answer to Silva at City in how the Spaniard offers intelligence, creativity and speed in passing to Guardiola's side.

United's play was seen as too laboured last season.

And with Michael Carrick now retired, Fred is seen as the long-term solution.

On the new signing at Old Trafford, Mourinho has said: “Fred is the complement we need in our midfielders qualities. His creative brain and passing vision will give us another dimension to our game.

“I am very happy he is joining our club and I believe our players know how important he can be in our team."
