Manchester United made an approach to Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger about a move north, it has been revealed.
The Daily Star says the tentative approach was made when Sir Alex Ferguson first planned to retire in 2002, but was rebuffed by the Frenchman.
Ferguson made his decision to quit public the previous summer before changing his mind in February 2002.
It is understood Wenger gave little consideration to the United offer and went on to land the Premier League crown again that season, finishing 10 points clear of third-placed United.
Last night former Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood said he was unaware of United's attempt and added: “I don't think Arsene has ever been tempted."
