Manchester United could've signed Daley Blind for NOTHING, it has been revealed.
United paid Ajax £14 million for the midfielder last week.
United legend Edwin van der Sar - now a director at Blind's former club Ajax - has lept to the defence of sporting director Marc Overmars, who has taken flak for selling Blind.
Van der Sar said: "Daley Blind's contract with Ajax was expiring fifteen months ago. He could have left on a free transfer.
"[Instead] the club kept hold of him and he leaves now for a considerable amount to one of the biggest clubs in the world."
