Roy Keane was prepared to stay with Aston Villa before yesterday's resignation, it has been revealed.
The Daily Star says Keane did offer to carry on until Lambert could find someone to replace him.
But it was felt it was best to sever their ties immediately .
Keane said: "It isn't fair to either Villa or Ireland, so I've made this decision.
"I'd like to thank Paul for giving me a great opportunity. I've really enjoyed my experiences there."
