Crystal Palace failed with a bid for Sampdoria striker Gonzalo Bergessio last month.
TMW says Palace and Samp had settled on terms over the experienced Argentine centre-forward, but a contract could not be agreed.
Bergessio was seeking €1.5 million for a six-month deal to move to Palace, terms which the Londoners deemed too rich.
Palace made several attempts in the final days of the winter market to strike terms with Bergessio's camp, but nothing could be struck.
Bergessio has come close to joining Tottenham in the past.
