Chelsea made a move for Diego Simeone before appointing Antonio Conte, it has been revealed.
El Mundo Deportivo says Simeone cast doubt over his future as Atletico Madrid boss after their Champions League final defeat to fierce rivals Real Madrid.
And the Argentine was already in contact with a number of top European clubs, including the Blues.
They say Simeone's agent and sister Natalia flew to London for talks with the Stamford Bridge hierarchy.
However the move didn't pan out and Roman Abramovich eventually named Conte as Chelsea's new permanent manager.
