Danny Welbeck was second-choice for Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger yesterday. Welbeck left Manchester United for Arsenal in a £16m switch.
The Daily Star says Wenger turned to Welbeck - who was also on north London rivals Tottenham's radar - after failing with a bid to sign Swansea's Ivorian striker Wilfried Bony.
Gunners star Jack Wilshere is thought to have given Wenger a glowing report about England team-mate Welbeck's attitude and professionalism.
