Manchester United dropped valuable points on Sunday night in their 1-1 draw with Swansea at the Liberty Stadium.
Gylfi Sigurdsson's late free kick cancelled out Wayne Rooney's controversial penalty on the stroke of halftime.
United were forced to make a premature substitution early on. Injury ridden full back Luke Shaw picked up an ankle knock and was replaced by Antonio Valencia after nine minutes of play.
Anthony Martial was involved in United's first chance when he latched onto Jesse Lingard's nifty through ball but was blocked by Swansea's Lukasz Fabianski
With the game seemingly at a standstill, the deadlock was broken after 45 minutes. Wayne Rooney converted from the penalty spot after a disputable decision following Marcus Rashford's clash with Fabianski. Replays later showed that the English striker had forced contact with the goalkeeper before falling in the box.
Despite their lead, United never solidified their dominance after going ahead. With ten minutes remaining, Glyfi Sigurdsson stepped up and slotted a perfect free kick that left United keeper David De Gea as stiff as a statue.
United would have counted themselves lucky to escape with a point as Swansea striker Fernando Llorente missed an easy chance to win the game in injury time.
For the Red Devils, the draw leaves them in 5th place, with the rest of their rivals still to play. As for Swansea, the point puts them on 32 points, two points from safety.
