The former Lyon coach is among the favourites for the post - should Newcastle stay up.

But the Evening Chronicle says Garde is understood to have cooled his interest.

The former Arsenal midfielder, who held brief talks with United in London back in January, has watched on with interest as the Magpies have dropped down the Premier League table.
