Peter Reid says Sunderland fans should be happy with just staying in the Premiership this season.

Even with Manchester United legend Roy Keane at the helm, Sunderland have struggled to attract players to the north-east.

And Reid says no matter how high the expectations of fans, 17th place next May would be just as impressive as topping the Championship.

He said: "Staying up would be just as big an achievement as coming up, without a doubt.

"People have to have a reality check. Even though there is massive support there, if Roy and Sunderland finish fourth from bottom that is success.

"Keane has done brilliantly. When he got there the club was struggling, in dire straits, and he has done an absolutely outstanding job."
