Former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is backing Jermain Defoe for a Euros call.
The Sunderland veteran has fired his club to Premier League safety and Redknapp wrote in the London Evening Standard: "It is a huge shame that Danny Welbeck is out for nine months and will miss Euro 2016.
"He would definitely have been part of Roy Hodgson's 23-man squad and I'm gutted for the lad because he only recently came back from another serious injury and looked really sharp.
"The fortunate thing for England is that we are well-stocked in the forward positions, so much so that I hear some suggesting Roy could take five strikers to the Euros. Harry Kane is the best centre-forward in the Premier League at the moment without a doubt. Jamie Vardy, Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge all have to go. Andy Carroll is one option and Theo Walcott has been talked about. If he does take five strikers, he could do worse than take Jermain Defoe.
"He's had a great season for Sunderland and would be a good impact player off the bench.
"Jermain has the experience and would offer something different as a squad player. He hasn't been in the set-up for a couple of years so I'm not sure it'll happen but I'd seriously consider him."
