Redknapp: Managers are over-rated, you would never see Man Utd hero Best watching opposition…

Harry Redknapp feels modern day coaches place too much emphasis on detailed analysis.

The former AFC Bournemouth, Portsmouth, West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur manager believes gone are the days when a player such as George Best would simply trot out and demolish his opposition having not even seen them play before.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Redknapp explained that things have become far too complicated from a coaching point of view.

“When Andre Villas-Boas was at Tottenham they said you needed A-Levels to work out what he was supposed to be doing," he said.

“The players didn't even know. It was all done on a computer and it was baffling.

“It's great, we sit at clubs watching ProZone and studying the opposition non-stop. We know everything they do. We're so obsessed with what they're doing we forget to play.

“Can you imagine Matt Busby sitting with George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton for an hour-and-a-half looking at how West Bromwich Albion might play?

“Do you think Bestie would be interested?

“They'd be thinking, let's just go out and play, we'll murder them. The game hasn't changed. The game's about good players. We're over-rated, managers."
